• Did you watch the Emmys? Cuz it may be true that #OscarsSoWhite, but after last night, it appears that #EmmysSoBlack. People of color won big last night, and it was kind of awesome to see. 


• If you haven't heard about this amazing film, mother! came out this weekend and appears to have been a flop. Which is sad, because it's a deeply allegorical film about women and the shit they endure. This analysis of the film, why it flopped, and what some of its allegory means is a good source of finding out about this mysterious little-marketed film.

• In Wow Did Not See That Coming news, actor Ed Skrein has left the new Hellboy reboot after the internet's outcry about his comic-canon Asian character being whitewashed. The studio has agreed to, instead, cast a more racially appropriate actor to stick with canon.

• Forbes has released its 2017 list of highest paid actresses, and as USA Today notes, not a single one is a person of color. This is my surprised face. Hollywood, get your *&^% together. 


• Donald Trump has gotten (rightfully) wrecked by almost everyone imaginable, for failing to speak out against white supremacists who caused the deadly riot in Virginia last weekend. Seth Meyers, never a fan of Trump to begin with, didn't hold back about the idiotic response from the guy squatting in the White House.

Today's critical rolls: According to some people, the solar eclipse next Monday will bring about the end of the world, or maybe just plain ol' alien abduction. Whatever. If this is your last weekend on Earth, what would you do with it if you had the money to do anything you wanted to?

• The New York Times chronicles how the comics industry is finally making strides towards diversifying not only characters, but creators as well. The star of the article is America Chavez and Gabby Riviera, the gay Latin woman writing America's first solo book. But this article mentions Luke Cage, Kim & Kim, La Borinquena, plus others, that are books written about minority heroes, and written by minority creators. Well worth a read!


• Speaking of diverse representation, this time at the movies, ABC writes about how there's been an uptick in diverse films at the theater, and as a result, we're seeing an uptick in Asian-American and Black-American movie goers as well. You mean when minorities see more of themselves in films, they might actually go to the theater more often? Shocking!

• Autostraddle's Ludmila Leiva discusses how Marvel's America Chavez is giving her hope for queers of color even in Trump's America. 


• If you’re following the video game industry, you may have noticed how many awesome games already came out despite February only just ending. Faced with this embarrassment of riches, Patrick Klepek at Waypoint asks for 2017 to slow the fuck down.


• Tomorrow is International Women's Day, and there is a general "Day Without A Woman" strike going on that encourages women to take the day off from work (paid or unpaid), and don't take on the usual responsibilities at home. The problem, as Quartz points out, is that such a strike day is mostly a day for privileged women who can afford to take the day off and who have nannies or grandparents who can take the kids for the day.
