Critical Hits & Misses #229

• Over at the Student Voices blog, Kayla Renee Parker tells the story of her having to deal with a progressive professor who forgot to hide her racism and ended up getting fired.

• ESPN has released the cover images for the first two Body issues in 2017, and men on Twitter are freaking out over the smoking cover for NFL running back Zeke Elliott. Who knew masculinity and heterosexuality was so fragile?

For today's musical hit, we have Kendrick Lamar and "ELEMENT."

Today's critical rolls: have you ever had to deal with some form of prejudice (sexism, racism, religion, orientation, etc)? If you're comfortable doing so, share about those experiences and how it was resolved... or how you wish it had been resolved.

Critical Hits & Misses #213

• Bill Maher got himself into some trouble over the weekend on his show, when he called himself a "house n****r" in response to a Republican Senator's invitation to "work in the fields" of Nebraska. But this article on Forbes isn't centered around Maher specifically, but rather is a discussion of white liberalism, the hidden racism inherent in it, and the white-washing of apologies after Maher's "slip" of the tongue. It's a fascinating discussion on issues we don't talk about much among liberals and progressives.

• I'm not cryin', you're cryin'! Wonder Woman, a superhero film starring a woman and more importantly directed by a woman, roared onto the big screen this past weekend, and proceeded to kick major ass. The Hollywood Reporter has the numbers.

For today's musical hit, we have Indigo Girls and "Galileo"

Today's critical rolls: With Wonder Woman doing so well at the box office, what other movies do you think/would you like to see Marvel and DC and Fox announce that are lady led (and hopefully some are at least lady-directed!)?

Critical Hits & Misses #175

Gender-neutral mods make games like Stardew Valley a better experience for those who identify as non-binary.

• If you’re a genderqueer fan of video games, you probably bemoan the fact big budget titles only ever allow you to play as a male or female character. It’s probably going to be a while before AAA publishers are going to catch up with reality. Until then, at least we can still count on mods, as Matt Sayer finds out in an article for Rock, Paper, Shotgun.

• Warning: the following story and article contain mention of incredibly disturbing racism in school, some antisemitism, and a whole lot of wtfuckery. You will probably be really pissed off, and you should be. Ahadi Bugg-Levine discusses the mock slave auction and slave posters made by children at a school in a progressive New Jersey community, and she dives deep into how progressives need to be ever more vigilant in their own local communities, and how we progressives have failed people of color overall with our "color blind" way of communicating.

For today's musical hit, we have The Tontons and "Golden"

Today's critical rolls: If you're a PC gamer, do you mod much? What are some of your favorite mods out there?
